Militarization of Indian Ocean

Recent development: Islamic Revolutionary Gaurd corps( IRGC), which is a elite group of Iranian army, plans to set up a permanent base in Indian Ocean region.

Indian ocean is third largest ocean in the world and due to its strategic and economic importance various countries try to control it. There are various exit and entry points in Indian ocean like strait of Mallaca, strait of Hormuz and Bab al Mandeb,so by choking these points anyone can control trade through Indian Ocean. So due to these reasons various countries had started the militrasition of Indian Ocean like USA and France since mid of twentieth century.

Major military bases in Indian Ocean:

  1. Diego Garcia: this is a military base of USA since 1970. USA had taken this on lease from UK.
  2. Reunion island : this is overseas territory of France so france use it as a military base.
  3. Djibouti: since 2017 djibouti is acting as military base for chinese PLA. By the way Djibouti is a military base for many other countries like France and USA.
  4. Hambantot : china had taken this port on lease from Sri Lanka in 2017.

Now iran want to establish its military base in Indian Ocean. This would lead to conflict between USA and Iran. Both counties share hostile relation. In 2019 USA had already designated IRGC as terrorist organization so if Iran could establish military base then US navy may attack Iranian ships.

Impact on India

Upto some extent impact on India would be positive because majority of countries share good relation with India and also this militrasation would help india to counter terrorism and piracy. Piracy is major issue in Indian Ocean specially near eastern coast of African continent. But if Iran could open a military base in Indian Ocean then this might be topic of concern because china may use this base against india due to its influence in Iran's foreign policy.

Way forward

So Rather than showing muscle power to each other, countries should cooperate to each other by sharing data on piracy and navigation.

Nepal's stand towards border disputes Nepal is having tough stand towards border issues with India about Kalapani, Lipulekh pass and other disputed territories. When India constructed road near Lipulekh for pilgrims to kailash mansarovar to...
